‘SEGMENTED TRADE’. MERCHANTS, MERCANTILE
PRACTICES AND MERCANTILISM BETWEEN TRIESTE,
THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA AND THE ATLANTIC OCEAN
IN THE XVIII CENTURY*

ABSTRACT: The emergence of the current globalisation phase and, at the beginning of the 21st
century, the outbreak of systemic crisis, have compellingly propelled spatial themes to the
forefront of historical debate once again. In this framework, the paper focuses on the trade and
economic relationships between Trieste, Mediterranean and Ocean. The essay particularly
analyses the Trieste merchants’ strategies and the role of Trieste in the global trade networks
hierarchizing and linking the various economic areas. The paper’s goal is highlight the
relationships, interconnections and proximity in global network connections and in the
relationships between centres and peripheries. It was within the context of these relationships
and complex hierarchies that the port of Trieste and the merchants based there became centre
stage players in the 18th century trade circuits.

TRA TRIESTE, IL MEDITERRANEO E L’OCEANO NEL XVIII SECOLO

SOMMARIO: L’avviarsi della attuale fase di globalizzazione e, all’inizio del XXI secolo, l’esplodere
della crisi sistemica hanno nuovamente imposto i temi spaziali al centro del dibattito tra gli storici.
In questo quadro, l’articolo si incentra sul commercio e le relazioni economiche esistenti tra
Trieste, il Mediterraneo e l’Oceano. In particolare lo studio analizza le strategie dei mercanti di
Trieste e il ruolo assunto dalla città nei circuiti globali del commercio che gerarchizzavano e
legavano le diverse aree economiche. L’articolo, inoltre, mira ad evidenziare il ruolo rivestito dalle
relazioni, interconnessioni e prossimità all’interno delle connessioni globali e delle relazioni che
connettevano i centri e le periferie. All’interno dell’ordito di tali complesse gerarchie e densi
legami, il porto di Trieste e i mercanti attivi in città diventarono attori importanti nei circuiti
mercantili del XVIII secolo.
