TRA POLITICA E DIPLOMAZIA NELLA VENEZIA DI METÀ
SEICENTO

SOMMARIO: L’articolo si focalizza sulla traduzione italiana del trattato politico francese Le Con-
seiller d’Estat (1632), pubblicata a Venezia nel 1646. L’obiettivo è duplice. Da un lato, si vuole
ricostruire le vicende e le dinamiche politiche, culturali e diplomatiche che portarono alla pubbli-
cazione della traduzione, nell’ambito delle relazioni tra Venezia e Francia negli anni centrali del
Seicento, così come delle politiche editoriali che segnarono il mercato veneto delle traduzioni;
dall’altro, si intende indagare gli aspetti materiali della traduzione, con un’attenzione partico-
lare al ruolo del traduttore e ai processi di adattamento per il pubblico italiano di contenuti e
saperi elaborati inizialmente per un diverso contesto.

THE ITALIAN TRANSLATION OF THE CONSEILLER D’ESTAT: CIRCULATION OF IDEAS AND
CULTURAL-POLITICAL NETWORKS IN VENICE IN THE MID-17TH CENTURY

ABSTRACT: This article focuses on the Italian translation of the French political treatise Le Conseiller
d’Estat (1632), published in Venice in 1646. The aim is twofold. On the one hand, I reconstruct the
political, cultural and diplomatic events and dynamics that led to the publication of the translation, in
the framework of the cultural and political relations between Venice and France in the central years
of the seventeenth century, as well as the editorial policies that marked the market of the Venetian
translations; on the other hand, I investigate the material aspects of the translation, paying particular
attention to the role of the translator and to the adaptation processes for the Italian public of content
and knowledge initially elaborated for a different context.

1. Il Conseiller d’Estat (1632). Ragion di stato ed economia politica

Nel 1632 uscì anonima, senza editore né luogo (ma con tutta probabi-
lità a Parigi), la prima edizione del Conseiller d’Estat, ou Recueil des plus
grandes considerations servans au maniement des Affaires publiques . Il

frontespizio forniva solo alcune scarne informazioni sul poderoso trat-
tato. Innanzitutto era indicata la suddivisione dell’opera «en trois par-
ties» e i temi da queste affrontati: «La I. [partie] contient les moyens
d’establir un Estat. La II. les moyens de le conserver. La III. les moyens
