SOMMARIO: Il saggio, che prende le mosse da concetti storiografici maturati in ambiente
tedesco e trattati in seguito anche in Italia, relativi alla fondazione di chiese e monasteri
privati da parte dell’aristocrazia, intende proporre nuovi spunti di riflessioni attraverso
l’analisi dei documenti di Adelicia Avenel Maccabeo. L’analisi delle chartae del XII secolo
della domina siciliana, relative alla fondazione del monastero di Adernò (Adrano) e poi
pure ad alcune chiese ubicate nell’area madonita, sembrano attestare l’esistenza di Ei-
genkirche ed Eigenkloster anche nell’isola. Il saggio, così, oltre a chiarire le motivazioni
sottese all’istituzione di chiese e monasteri privati da parte di un esponente della élite
aristocratica normanna, si prefigge di ricostruire, altresì, le vicende di una comunità mo-
nastica benedettina femminile, quella di santa Lucia di Adernò, insediata nel 1158 sul
versante meridionale dell’Etna.

NEW POINTS OF REFLECTION ON THE TOPIC FROM THE DOCUMENTS OF ADELICIA
AVENEL MACCABEO

ABSTRACT: The essay, which starts from historiographical concepts matured in the German
environment and subsequently treated also in Italy, relating to the foundation of private
churches and monasteries by aristocracy, intends to propose new points for thought
through the analysis of the documents of Adelicia Avenel Maccabeo. The analysis of the
12 th century papers of the Sicilian domina, relating to the foundation of the monastery of
Adernò (Adrano) and then also to some churches located in the Madonite area, seems to
attest to the existence of Eigenchirke and Eigenkloster also on the island. Thus, in addition
to clarifying the reasons underlying the establishment of private churches and monasteries
by an exponent of the Norman aristocratic élite, the essay also aims to reconstruct the
events of the female Benedictine monastic community, that of saint Lucia of Adernò, estab-
lished in 1158 on the southern side of Etna.
