IL GALEONE LIVORNO: SOGNI DI GLORIA E IMPRESE
MANCATE DI FERDINANDO I DE' MEDICI FRA LE
INDIE E IL MEDITERRANEO (1606-1608)*

SOMMARIO: Il Granducato di Toscana all’inizio del XVII secolo si trovava in una posizione di
subalternità rispetto ai grandi stati marittimi dell’epoca come Spagna e Portogallo uniti, l’Inghil-
terra o la giovane Repubblica Olandese, a causa del suo svantaggio geografico, economico e
militare. Intenzionato ad accrescere l’importanza della Toscana sul piano internazionale, Ferdi-
nando I de’ Medici sostituì al sostegno tradizionale alla Spagna una politica estera più indipen-
dente, individuando nei Paesi Bassi un territorio strategico da cui poter trarre informazioni e
strumenti funzionali ai propri progetti di espansione economica e di prestigio politico. All’invio di
propri agenti e informatori nella Repubblica Olandese seguì l’acquisto del galeone chiamato poi
“Livorno” ad Amsterdam, con l’obiettivo di svolgere missioni commerciali nelle Indie. L’ostilità
della Compagnia olandese delle Indie Orientali spinse Ferdinando I a deviare momentanea-
mente il suo sforzo verso il Mediterraneo, impiegando la nuova nave nel fallimentare assalto
all’isola di Cipro nel 1607. Nel saggio si analizzano i protagonisti e le dinamiche di questa sinora
ignota operazione di acquisto e impiego del galeone Livorno, simbolo delle ambizioni del gran-
duca Ferdinando I.

THE GALLEON LIVORNO: DREAMS OF GLORY AND FAILED ENTERPRISES
OF FERDINANDO I DE’ MEDICI BETWEEN THE INDIES AND THE MEDITER-
RANEAN SEA (1606-1608)

SUMMARY: The Grand Duchy of Tuscany at the beginning of the 17 th century was in a position
of subordination to the great maritime states of the time such as Spain and Portugal united,
England or the young Dutch Republic, due to its geographical, economic, and military
disadvantage. Intending to increase the importance of Tuscany on the international level,
Ferdinando I de' Medici replaced the traditional support to Spain with a more independent
foreign policy, identifying in the Netherlands a strategic territory from which to draw information
and tools functional to his projects of economic expansion and political prestige. The dispatch of
his agents and informants to the Dutch Republic was followed by the purchase of the galleon
then called "Livorno" in Amsterdam, with the aim of carrying out trade missions in the Indies.
The hostility of the Dutch East India Company prompted Ferdinando I to momentarily divert his
effort to the Mediterranean, employing the new ship in the failed assault on the island of Cyprus
in 1607. The essay analyzes the protagonists and dynamics of this hitherto unknown operation
of purchase and use of the galleon Livorno, the symbol of the ambitions of Grand Duke
Ferdinando I.
